Hawaii!

SO we went to Hawaii . . . 3 months ago! I know- I 'm WAY behind! Spencer's been making me feel especially guilty about not having documented our trip yet, especially since I've been documenting all sorts of other random things! It's just so daunting to go through the hundreds of pictures we took - on my phone, his phone, my camera, etc. It's a LOT and I'm not sure where to begin. Let's just say - it was AWESOME!!!
I almost had to pinch myself to make sure it really was actually happening. To get away with NO kids for a week is quite an accomplishment. It really was quite incredible how it all worked out so perfectly.

Funny how we want so badly to get a break from our kids, but then when we actually get one, we miss them like crazy! The hardest part of the trip was definitely missing my kids. My parents are amazing and I never once worried about the kids (which is huge for me since I'm a worrier), but we were on a very kid friendly beach watching everyone with their families and I couldn't help but miss mine.

But oh man was it a nice, much needed break away for Spencer and I. We stayed at the JW Marriott Resort in KoOlina and soaked up all the beauty of this gorgeous island. Check out the view we had from our balcony:
We made sure to make the most of every second we were there. We arrived Friday afternoon 11/21, and spent the afternoon/evening exploring the area around our resort.

Our little protected lagoon was the best! Every morning we went for a sunrise swim after our work-out.

Saturday morning we were up early for our first hike of the trip - up Koko Crater Trail. This was the one hike I was most looking forward to. One of my favorite parts of the trip was doing things that Spencer and I can't do when we have our kids with us. Pretty sure our kids wouldn't be able to handle this hike yet.
It was pretty steep and along old railroad ties the entire way up.

It got pretty scary at one point when the tracks were open below.
The views at the top were pretty amazing!
We made some friends at the top who offered to take a picture of us which was nice.
I'm not a fan of posing alone for pictures!
From the top of Koko Crater you could see where we were headed next - Hanama Bay!
The way down seemed just as hard. I lost my footing at one point and slipped a bit. Some people walked along the sides of the tracks when it opened up below. Others forged a path off the tracks to avoid it altogether.
I found it easiest to go straight down the middle and not slow down!
Pretty cool that we climbed that crater!
After our hike we went directly over to Hanama bay for some snorkeling! It was incredible! The water was warm and clear, and we soaked up every minute of the glorious sunshine!
The view from one side of the beach:
And from the other - you could see Koko Crater that we had just climbed!
That night we went to dinner at La Mariana Sailing Club (great recommendation Jeremy)!

On Sunday we tried keeping it low key. We got dressed and ready for church and then headed over to the Marriott beach Club (just 2 Lagoons down from us and where we would stay if we ever come back) for a sales presentation. Spence and I never decline an offer to these things when we travel because they always give such great gifts (and we don't have any trouble saying no)! They gave us wrist bands to use all their facilities and pools as well as a bunch of different offers for discounted excursions which we ended up not choosing and opted for 10,000 Marriott points instead! The sales presentation went much longer than expected though and it ran over into the time we needed to get to church. Totally disappointed (I was looking forward to attending a Hawaii ward) we changed our clothes and loaded up good church reading material and headed to the far west side of the island to Yokohauma Bay. We stopped by a local deli on our way there to pick up some sandwiches and snacks for a picnic! Couldn't resist getting a delicious Hawaiian Frost while we waited for our food!
Yokohauma Bay was absolutely gorgeous with huge waves! The waves would pull us far out in the ocean and then push us fast back onto the shore. Sand got into pretty much every crevice of our body! It was a blast though. We'd play in the water, then lay out - try to read from the Ensign, and then fall asleep. It was a wonderfully relaxing afternoon.
I must have been so relaxed that I forgot to take pictures cause this is all we have from this gorgeous beach! I do remember being interested in the other people there on the beach though. One mom was there with her parents and 2 girls. They must have been from the east coast because they had really strong New Jersey accents. The grandparents were great and playing fun games with the girls but they wouldn't let the girls into the water because of the "strong waves". I felt so bad for those girls who desperately just wanted to get into the water!

On Monday we decided to take a drive up to the North Shore. KoOlina is on the dry side of the island so we had gorgeous sun our entire time there, but as soon as we left and headed north, the rain started.
The rain didn't stop us from having fun though. We braved the rain and ran into the Dole Plantation
where we found a necklace for me, dresses for the girls . . .
. . . and bought a freshly cut up pineapple!! DElish!!
Then it was onto Ted's Bakery for lunch (thank's for the recommendation mom)!
After lunch we spent the afternoon exploring the North Shore. 1st stop - the temple, which was under construction so not up to par, but still beautiful.
We got to watch some of the Van's World Cup surfers compete. It was super windy though and raining off and on so we didn't stay too long.
We stopped off the side of the road to check out "turtles beach". I was anxious to stop here after seeing pics from my mom's trip just a month earlier.
The onto Shark's cove:
If it had been warmer we would have loved to lay out on the beach and do some snorkeling here.
It was fun to have the freedom to do whatever we wanted, for as long as we wanted. We passed by this cool house and decided to flip around and check it out. It was on the same property as a deserted convalesant home and the entire inside of the house had burned down, but the foundation stood strong. A forest was growing inside and coming out through the windows. So cool to walk around and do some exploring.
There was just so much cool stuff to see and check out, and everywhere we went was so picturesque. I was wishing we had the kids with us so I wouldn't have to pose alone in anymore pictures.
Just beyond the park was a totally deserted beach with amazingly soft sand.
From there we stopped by Waimea Valley. It was so gorgeous that we wanted to walk around for a bit and check it out. We could have payed a $15 fee to hike to a waterfall, but I was perfectly content just walking around the grounds!
Check out the beautiful flower I found just laying on the ground:
Then we drove on through Hale'iwa and stopped at some local surf shops and art galleries.
After a full day of exploring we made it back it time to enjoy the gorgeous sun set.
Tuesday morning we hiked Diamond Head:
It was a gorgeous sunrise!
Then we went back to our hotel and spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying our pool and beach there.
We made sure never to miss a beach sunset:
Wednesday morning we fit in our regular morning work-out and ocean swim before heading out to the local Flea Market. Note to self: bring more cash next time! We did one loop around and then narrowed down the couple of things we wanted to buy. By then we were hungry and ready for some lunch. It was onto Opal Thai for a very unique experience.
Meet Chef Opal who basically tosses the menu, asks a few food preference questions, and then brings out the food. Spencer was in heaven!!
From there we headed to Spencer's favorite beach - Waimea bay. It was a gorgeous beach day:

This was day 6 of being in the sun and my skin was starting to do some funky things. Not sure if it's heat rash or sun poisoning, but my hands and arms had faint little red bumps all over them, and they itched like crazy. By this point I was trying to limit my sun exposure so we didn't stay long.
After an hour or two we packed up and headed onto Hale'iwa for Matsumoto's Shaved Ice!!
 Totally hit the spot!
We made it back to the hotel in time for an ocean swim. Spencer wanted to go for an evening snorkel and I'm so glad I decided to join him. We explored the reef for awhile, saw dozens of amazing fish, and then after about 20 minutes, this huge turtle swims right by us! So of course we flipped around to follow it. Then for the next 10 minutes we followed that turtle around underwater! It was super awesome and the perfect ending to our trip!

Thursday (Thanksgiving) morning we got up early and headed to the airport to catch a 7am flight back to San Fransisco. I can't say I was sad to go cause I felt like our trip was the perfect length. I felt feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to conquer life again with my favorite guy by my side!
And I was pretty excited to see those kids of ours!
I sure am grateful for this sweet husband of mine who makes sure that we get away and take trips together. I love you babe! Thank you for the fun adventure and for always putting up with me! You complete me! :)

Elle's weekend with Q Bear!

Elle got to take her class Q Bear home this past weekend. It's quite amusing how exciting it is for kids to be given this responsibility. Elle took super good care of him. Here's her write up of what she and Q-Bear did over the weekend:
And here's the weekend with pictures:

Friday night "popcorn movie" night - they watched "Stuart Little 2".
Saturday morning breakfast - Q shaped pancakes:
Saturday afternoon we headed over to the cousins house for some fun! Q Bear and Elle got to try out the dirt bike. . .
the mini tractor. . .
. . . and play with all the chickens!
Aunt Lindsay made us dutch oven pizzas and then we roasted marshmallows and made s'mores for dessert!
Q Bear went with us to church on Sunday and then onto Boppi and Grandpa Al's house for dinner. Sadly no pictures were taken on Sunday.

Here's the poster Elle made that will hang in her classroom for her spotlight at the end of the week!

Joy school drop-out

Today I let Calvin make a decision to drop-out of his Tuesday joy school group. In the moment I felt 100% ok with it, but now I'm feeling torn. I'm just so tired of hearing Calvin cry about how he doesn't want to go to school. He gets such anxiety and it really kills me to drop him off when he's hysterical (mostly cause I feel bad that my friend has to deal with it). It's also a killer to hear him tell me how he just wants to be with me - "Let's go run errands mommy. Ya, let's go to Costco. That would be fun." Spence tells me I shouldn't baby him, but I don't feel like it's babying him. I only have 2 more years of having Cal home with me and I really don't see the need to force school or play groups on him if he's not ready. I'm trying to savor every last minute I have with him before he heads off to kindergarten and I have all the time in the world to run my errands alone. But then I watch videos like this one and don't want anything to come between these sweet friendships he's developed.
I figure I can always have play dates with his Tuesday joy school buddies (Thursday is our park day that most of them go to).

I am planning on keeping Cal in the Wednesday group just because it's with his church friends that he sees on a regular basis, is comfortable at their houses, and it's during the time when I help out with centers in Elle's class. So we'll make it work.

I just love my little buddy that I get to spend my mornings with. He's so much fun to take places. Monday morning we did some returns, found a fun park, splashed in a fountain, and then rode up and down the escalator at the mall for awhile.
It's the memories like these that I'll cherish when he's all grown up and in school all day. I'm never gonna get this time back so I'm gonna make sure we live it up!

Madi's weekend with Q Bear

Madi was given the responsibility of taking Q-Bear home the last weekend in January. Her job was to document all the fun things Q-Bear did over the weekend and then bring the journal and bear back to school the following Monday. Here's the journal entry Madi turned into school on Monday the 25th:
We didn't have room to include all the pictures we took, so I'll do that here!

Park on Friday after school:
There were lots of friends there that wanted to join in on the Q-Bear fun!
Popcorn movie night:
Bedtime for Q-bear, who borrowed Cal's bathrobe (which Cal totally freaked out about and the bathrobe was removed immediately after this picture was taken):
Madi made sure that Q-Bear help out with Saturday jobs:
Saturday game of bowling:
Sunday morning breakfast of Q-bisquits (made by Spencer):
Pretty sure most parents aren't too thrilled about bringing a germ infested bear into their home for the weekend, but the kids think it's the greatest thing ever. I'm grateful for the little things that help my kids feel special (bummer about the fuzzy pic - I snapped it with my phone as we headed off to school Monday morning to return Q-bear).
