Staying in Bed

Shortly after graduating to her big girl bed, Madi realized her freedom of getting out of bed and doing whatever she wanted to do. At first she'd just bring books into bed (which didn't really bother me much), but then she began getting out to play with her toys. I quickly became annoyed and began looking for ways of keeping Madi in her bed. I started going into her room and putting her back into bed. Didn't work so well though. Madi would just get right back out. Then I remembered my friend Krista having a similar problem awhile back. So I got onto her blog to read about what she did. I loved it and immediately put the idea into practice! My sister got me hooked on this book right after Madi was born. It was the book I'd turn to when I started sleep training her, and I believe it's what helped me get her sleeping through the night (and when I say sleeping through the night, I mean 12 hours straight) by 4 months old! So I was not surprised that Weissbluth's suggestions pulled through again. I made Madi her own set of sleep rules and began the sticker chart the next morning! Thanks Krista for the reminder!!

Today marked a whole month of using the sticker chart and check out the results we've had! Way to go Madi!

Some nights I'd hear Madi talking and/or singing in her bed (ok- most nights!), but as long as she stayed in her bed, we'd give her a sticker in the morning (or after her nap). I was super impressed with how well Madi took to these sleep rules. She went from getting out of bed every night to staying in her bed most nights. Nap time still needs some work, but it's a heck of a lot better than she was doing before!
Oh, and I also have to add that this month included a change of bedroom for Madi. Elle moved into the crib on October 14th, forcing me to move Madi into the office. Surprisingly Madi was thrilled about the change and hasn't been phased a bit!

Now, just in case this idea gets old, I'm including another idea that my friend Krista gave me (she really is amazing- always full of great ideas and fun ways of spicing things up)! In the words of Krista: "Lately she's (her daughter Kate) been doing the million-excuses-to-get-out-of-bed thing, and you can't deny a child who has to use the bathroom or wants a drink of water! So what I started doing was I made her three paper flowers, and they live in a paper flower pot by her bed. Every time she gets out of bed OR calls me in for some reason, it's fine, but she loses a flower. If she loses all three, then not only will I not come back again under any circumstances but she also loses her blankie. If she keeps all three, she gets a sticker in the morning. Just a little spin on the sleep rules (they lose their power after a while if you don't keep it fresh, I guess) that I thought I'd share."
Thanks Krista for sharing!!

All together again

After a birthday weekend in Utah for Spencer, and a trip down south for the girls and I, we're now home again and back to the usual grind. Spencer had a great time, despite BYU's blowout loss to TCU (note to coaches: should have thrown to Pitta more!!).

Since Spencer failed to take any pictures, these will have to do!

It was definitely an exhausting weekend (being a single parent is a LOT of work), but we still had a ton of fun! Madi loved playing with her cousins and I loved watching them play together. It was refreshing having my sister's company and advice on things. She and Curteis are great parents! Even though Madi is not an easily adaptable child, it was nice being in a new environment, and being reminded of the things I need to be stricter with Madi on.

We had an action packed weekend! Friday was spent at the North Carolina State Fair. It really was an awesome fair with tons of fun, FREE activities for the kids (hopefully we'll be able to go again next year). It would have been the perfect day if Madi haven't missed a nap the day before and gotten rotten sleep that night. An overly tired two year old is NOT my kind of fun. At least she was happy for the first half...

This tractor was a hit!

We got to see all sorts of animals. . .

This hen layed an egg just seconds before we walked up!

Of course the kids got a little crazy, including sticking their hands out to hungry animals (sorry so blurry, I got a little freaked out)!

So then we implemented the buddy system!
There really was so much to see and do (not to mention eat)! But one of my favorite activities was put on by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

Each kid got a bucket. . .
Then headed off to "pick" fake fruits and vegetables

After their bucket was full, they took it off to be weighed and measured.

Then they were given money for their produce.
The kids then walked into a tent to use their money to "buy" a bag of goodies (including a pencil, fliers, and most importantly- a yummy apple straight from the fields)! Then they sat down for coloring.

Ani and Madi enjoying their delicious apples.

Aside from being exhausted, it really was a fabulous day!

After short naps and an early bedtime we woke up Saturday morning and headed off to Marbles Kids Museum. I was excited to meet up with my good friend Doreen and her boys (unfortunately Matt had to stay home and study). I never got a picture of us together (probably due to the fact that we were chasing our kids around most of the time), but luckily Tisha was able to follow Madi around so Doreen and I could hang out for a little bit!

I did get a picture of Madi and Hunter though. Not the cutest of Madi, but at least I got Hunter to smile!

Marbles is such a cool place and I really wish we could have stayed there all day! But alas, a tired kid is never any fun. So instead we tried to squeeze everything into just two hours!

I didn't get a ton of pictures (since I wasn't with Madi most of the time), so here's just a few of their activities.

They had such an amazing garden that you could eat from. Here's Curteis showing us the garden.

Assuring me that it really was edible!

The rest of the weekend was spent relaxing and enjoying each others company. Elle got lots of attention this weekend!

Good thing Adley and Ani are getting a new baby brother in just 4 months. They're gonna be such big helpers for their mom!

These guys sat here and said "cheese" for probably a minute straight while waiting for Tisha and I to snap some pictures. Funny though- I didn't really get a good one even from a whole minute of them "cheezin' it!"
Thanks Calhouns for the awesome weekend! Can't wait to see you guys again soon!

I was wrong

Remember this post? Well, I have now totally and completely changed my mind! I'm guessing the "terrible two's" have finally hit because I'm willing to claim that TWO is one of the hardest ages ever!!

30 years old!

Happy Birthday to Spencer!

Today we get to celebrate Spencer's 30 fabulous years of life. Unfortunately for him it's his longest day of the week. So while I'm home making a birthday cake, Spencer gets to work for 4 hours, go to school for 6, followed by studying until midnight! What a way to celebrate!

My gift to him this year is a guys weekend in Utah! Spencer flies out on Thursday and will spend his birthday weekend hanging out with his buddies, eating out at all our favorite places (Cafe Rio and Bombay House to name a few), playing some golf, and most importantly- cheering on his favorite college football team- GO BYU!

Since we'll be flying back to the west cost in less than 2 months, I opted out of breaking the bank account (which consists mostly of student loans anyway) and will not be coming along with the girls. Instead, Madi, Elle, and I will drop Spencer off at the airport and head on to North Carolina to spend the weekend with the Calhoun Clan!

There's no need of doing some cheesy post about how awesome Spencer is and how happy I am that he was born, and how I'm basically the luckiest girl in the whole world to have him as a husband- cause I'm sure everyone that reads this already knows how cool Spencer is and feels honored to be associated with him! With that said, here's to my girls favorite guy!

3 Months

Time really has flown by. I have a picture of Elle on my phone that I snapped when she was 5 weeks old. Doesn't seem that long ago, but it kinda makes me sad to know that she's growing and changing so fast! The good thing about Elle getting older is that she's become a little more predictable. However, every time I think I've got Elle's schedule figured out, she goes and changes again. At the beginning of her second month (8 weeks old) I started a 6pm bedtime. Then shortly after that, naps started to become a little more predictable. Her schedule for the majority of the month was as follows (sorry if this is post is boring, but its mostly so I don't forget!):

7am day begins- eats, cute smiles, hangs out with dad in bed
8am back to sleep (usually in mom and dad's bed, sometimes in car seat- taking dad to the metro, followed by errands/outings with mom and Madi)
9am awake- play, or chill in car seat if we're out and about
10am back to sleep
11am awake, eat, play with mom and Madi
Sometime between 12 and 1pm Home for a nap- in bed
3pm awake, eat, plays in gym, hangs out with mom
4pm back in bed
5pm awake, plays with Madi, tummy time, bath, eats, story
6pm (sometimes before) in bed for the night
Up twice at night to eat:
1) Sometime around midnight
2) Somewhere between 3-4am

But again, as soon as I got used to this schedule she's already begun to change. Good thing, because I'm not a fan of the short, sporadic naps! I'm really looking forward to a good nap in the morning (so that Madi and I can start having our "school time" again), and a solid nap in the afternoon (which thankfully she's already got going)! One thing I'm definitely looking forward to is for Elle to begin sleeping better at night. She's been a lot more difficult to sleep train than I remember Madi being. By 3 months old, Madi had already done 10 1/2 hours straight! Elle usually does 5 hours for her first stretch (sometimes 6 when she goes right to sleep after being layed down), but there are several nights that she's still crying off and on for about an hour in the early evening. Night feedings are no big deal except that I'm trying to stretch them out longer. So when Elle first wakes up, I go in and give her the binky. It usually gives me another hour. I do this several times each night- causing me to get out of bed anywhere between 3-8 times a night. I don't even remember what's it's like to get a solid nights sleep anymore. Sometimes I wonder if it's even possible for me to sleep through all the little noises like I used to.

Aside from not being the greatest sleeper, Elle sure is an easy going baby. Maybe it comes with being a second child, but Elle's just gotten used to chillin. She's pretty patient- only crying when she's tired and/or hungry.

Two big things this month:
1. Gaining enough neck support for sitting in the bumbo.

Doesn't she just look so grown-up here?!

2. Graduating (just this past week) from her cradle to now sleeping in the crib.
Elle is pretty dang excited about it too!
(Big thanks to Grandpa Al and Boppi for the new cute outfit that just arrived in the mail today-what a fun surprise!)

We sure love our Elle Belly!

It's the Age

I just downloaded a bunch of pictures from my camera and found all these cute ones of Madi. Good timing too, cause I have a lot of stuff that I've been wanting to record about how Madi's adjusting to having a baby sister- AND being two!

We all like to have something to blame our kids crazy behavior on- a missed nap, teeth coming in, company in town, a new baby in the house, etc. etc. At least it always makes me feel a little better when I know why Madi's acting up, so that I know how to fix it. But lately I haven't been able to tell if Madi's hard days (or should I say "moments") are due to her wanting attention or simply just because she's TWO! One minute we'll be having the best conversation about the pictures we're painting, and the next minute Madi's painting on the table, watching to see what I'm going to do. One minute she'll be playing nicely with Elle, and the next minute Madi's chucking a toy at her! One minute we're snuggled up reading a story together, and the next minute Madi's grabbed the book out of my hands, insisting that she wants to read it.

Here's the sweet Madi, giving her sister some love.

It's been an exhausting couple of weeks- feeling like I have to watch Madi like a hawk when she's around her sister, to make sure she's being kind. Hitting has become an issue again. For some reason Madi gets the biggest kick out of picking on Eleanor. At least once a day Madi comes up and hits Elle's head. Maybe she thinks she's being playful, but it's still hitting and I'm determined to make Madi realize that it's mean! I discipline Madi for "naughty" behavior almost a dozen times a day. She's now started putting herself into time out when she knows she's done something wrong. I've taken it as a sign that Madi now needs something a little more drastic for punishment.

I feel like I'm constantly reminding Madi to "share" and to "be gentle" (nice, kind, loving, quiet, and soft can also be substituted here). But now I'm at a loss as to what else can be done. I've tried all the tricks I know and have come to a conclusion that it's simply the age. Well, that and a combination of going from only child to oldest child! She'll grow out of it- right?

Luckily we've got a good supply of the cute moments, that make the crazy ones easy to forget!

Good Intentions

Smile!

"It's ok Eleanor, I'll take care of you."

"What's the matter? Why are you still crying?"

"I need to give Eleanor a kiss."

"That's better!"
I know Madi really does have good intentions of being a loving, kind, nice older sister.
